The Howgills from Sedbergh
Walk 3
- The Calf [676m] Calders [674m] and Arrant Haw [605m] from Sedbergh -
8 miles - 4 hours - A superb high level excursion into he Howgills using
the Saturdays only bus from Dent Station alighting at Sedbergh. Alternatively
park in Sedbergh. This is the simplest excursion in to the Howgills the
slight downside being the return along more or less the same route. Back
to Dentdale

If arriving by train alight at Dent Station and take the the Saturdays or Summer Sunday bus from Dent Station to Sedbergh which should be waiting on the station access road. This is timed to fit in with the northbound morning train service from Leeds.
Alighting the bus outside Sedbergh post office, continue along the main street past the Dalesman pub and turn right up a windy street passing the village hall on the left. Upon reaching a farm turn right, through the farm yard and bear left along the fell side wall for a short while then turning right to gain height After 1/4 mile or so turn left directly to the summit of Winder [473m]. From the summit of Winder proceed almost due north to follow a well defined path to Arant Haw [605m].

| The Calf |
Continue straight n from Arant Haw descending slightly to a saddle in the ridge and then rising steeply with a zig zag to the summit of Calders [674m]. The obvious path then dips slightly and then upwards again to reach The Calf [676m] with some pretty impressive views along the way.
From The Calf the return route can be contemplated to make a circuit several of which are described elsewhere. However the easiest way is to simply retrace steps back to Calders taking the avoiding path around Arrant Haw. Just before the slight climb back up Winder bear left to pick up the path down the right hand side of Settlebeck Gill. This gets steep as it nears the bottom.

At the bottom of the gill pass through a metal gate and follow the path alongside Settlebeck Gill back towards Sedbergh with the fortified hill on the left. This passes a farm joining the access road. Passing through a gate the track emerges between the houses and quickly descends to Joss Lane car park on Sedbergh Main Street. Turn right and proceed along the main street to reach the bus stop which is outside the Dalesman Pub.
If time permits there are various cafes in the centre of Sedbergh or perhaps the Dalesman Pub.
